National Honor Society
The National Honor Society (NHS) is a nationwide organization that recognizes high school students who demonstrate excellence in scholarship, leadership, service, and character. At Lakeville South, NHS members are students who not only achieve in the classroom, but also make a positive impact in their school and community.
Membership in NHS is both an honor and a responsibility. Students are expected to be active participants who model integrity, responsibility, and service to others.
The Four Pillars of National Honor Society
Scholarship
NHS recognizes students who are committed to academic success and lifelong learning. Members must maintain a strong GPA and consistently demonstrate dedication to their studies.
Leadership
Leadership is about using your strengths to positively influence others. NHS students take initiative, contribute to their school community, and often serve in leadership roles in activities, teams, or organizations.
Service
Service is at the heart of NHS. Members give back through volunteer work that supports both the school and the larger community. Students are expected to complete 40 total service hours per year, which must include at least 4 chapter-sponsored service hours.
Character
NHS members are expected to demonstrate honesty, respect, responsibility, and strong moral character in all aspects of their lives. They serve as role models for their peers both inside and outside of school.
Why Join NHS?
Being part of NHS provides students with meaningful opportunities to grow as leaders, serve others, and strengthen skills that will benefit them in college, careers, and life. Membership also reflects a student’s commitment to academic excellence and community involvement.
How to Apply
Students who have a cumulative GPA of 3.7 or higher are eligible to apply.
Eligible students will receive an email invitation to apply in the spring of their sophomore or junior year. The application process typically includes:
- Verification of GPA eligibility
- A record of leadership experiences
- Documentation of service and volunteer activities
- A review by the faculty council
Not all applicants are selected. The faculty council conducts a thorough review of each application, and membership is granted only to students who clearly demonstrate outstanding achievement in scholarship, leadership, service, and character.
What We Look For in NHS Members
We seek students who:
- Demonstrate a strong commitment to academic excellence
- Step up as leaders in school or community activities
- Consistently give their time to help others
- Demonstrate honesty, responsibility, and respect
- Are willing to be active, involved members of the chapter
